Trauma-Informed Therapy

Traumatic experiences can come in many forms and can affect us in ways we may not fully understand. Trauma therapy helps us move forward from our painful past.

What is Trauma Therapy?

Trauma therapy includes different types of counseling, or modalities, that treat the symptoms of trauma and resolve traumatic memories. Common trauma therapies that we utilize at Inner Balance include:

  • Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Cognitive processing therapy

Traumatic experiences can come in any shape or form. We believe treating trauma should be unique to each client and their experiences.

Therapy for trauma will generally involve personalized talk therapy, as well as EMDR. EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, and has been the gold standard for trauma treatment for decades. Essentially, EMDR uses the brain’s natural processes in order to re-frame traumatic memories into something less distressful.

What Does it Mean to Be Trauma-Aware?

Therapists who are trauma-aware understand that trauma can have lasting and wide-reaching impacts on a person. It also means that there’s an understanding that many people have experienced trauma, so they may do their best to avoid common trauma triggers. A trauma-aware therapist will also understand common trauma responses and help their clients through them.

What Does it Mean to Be Trauma-Informed?

Many therapists can say that they’re trauma-aware, but fewer can say they’re trauma-informed. Trauma-aware care is done with the understanding that trauma can have an impact on a client, while trauma-informed care is done with intimate knowledge of the diverse causes, impacts, and treatments of trauma.

Every therapist at Inner Balance Counseling goes through intensive training to be trauma-informed. They fully understand that trauma can be at the root of other mental health challenges, and create a plan to treat that trauma. They create a safe space and take steps to avoid retraumatization.
