General Mental Health Counseling

Counseling can be a great way for people to find support for the issues that trouble them the most and help them do things they have not been able to do on their own.

What is mental health counseling?

Mental health counseling, also known as therapy or psychotherapy, is a meeting of a counselor and a client in order to help them achieve a desired outcome. Counselors or therapists help assist clients every day on a variety of issues and problems.

Counselors are not life coaches or psychiatrists. Unlike life coaches, we are graduate-level, clinical professionals with extensive training in how to help people make changes in their lives.

We do not prescribe medications, but often work with psychiatrists who do. As counselors, we are here to guide you through various healing processes, support you in making healthy decisions, and help you become the person you want to be.

Do you need to know who that is yet? No; we are here to help you figure it all out at your own pace.

How does mental health therapy work?

Therapy or mental health counseling is a collaborative process where we work together to help you define and reach your goals. Therapy is not us telling you what to do or giving you a prescription.

We help you find solutions to current problems and past harms. We work with you to help you learn coping skills, improve your self-esteem, make both little and big changes in your life, and find optimal mental health.

This does require effort on your part for the process to work, but we are here to help you 100% of the way. Therapy is a journey where we act as your guide.

What does mental health counseling address?

A lot! We are here to help you with your past, present and future. This may included addressing difficult areas of your life such as:

  • Self esteem
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Sadness
  • Panic attacks
  • Past traumas
  • Feeling too emotional
  • Feeling not enough
  • Relationship problems
  • Family issues
  • Stress
  • Career exploration
  • Substance abuse
  • OCD
  • Or just general overall stuckness in life

Who should seek out help from a mental health therapist?

If you have or are currently dealing with any of the above struggles, seeing a mental health counselor can help you process and move forward with life. Even if you’ve never been given a diagnosis having to do with mental health, anyone looking for a voice of support can benefit from some form of mental health therapy.

The inner balance approach to mental health counseling

At Inner Balance Counseling, we strive to provide quality therapy and a safe space for you to explore your challenges and concerns. We are different from other places in that we care about you. You are not just a number on a page but a person who deserves to be heard and treated with respect.

When you arrive at Inner Balance you will be greeted by your therapist and shown back to their inviting office. Your first session is a “get to know you” session. We will take note of your history, hear your concerns and ask you about your goals.

Your second session will focus on what YOU want to achieve, not what other people, society, or your family thinks you should be doing. We create a personalized treatment plan so we can help you achieve your goals. After that, we begin journeying down the road of health and healing with you–however long that takes.
